Directorate Sports and Youth Welfare is the department of Madhya Pradesh Government, established in 1975, for the development of sports and youth welfare. Directorate Sports and Youth Welfare is also known as Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Madhya Pradesh, acts as major governing body and is mainly responsible for sports development and welfare of the youth in the state. One of the major functions and objectives of this department is to frame various policies and laws for the development and promotion of sports in the state. It strives to promotes various sports, adventurous activities and provides sports facilities and infrastructure in the state. It looks after overall process to spot the talent and provide necessary guidance to the budding players to hone their skills. Infrastructure for Sports in Madhya Pradesh

Directorate Sports and Youth Welfare of Madhya Pradesh develops sports infrastructure and provides sports facilities in the entire region. State government has taken various initiatives for the development of the sports in the state. New Sport Policy 2005 has been announced to promote sports and develop a healthy sports personal pool by improving infrastructure facilities, organizing sports events on regular basis and motivating children for participation in various events. As per this policy, it aimed to set up a sport assistance fund while establishing State Sports Authority in place of State Sports Council, establishing district sports centers. Sport persons would be given preference for appointment as sports teacher in the state. Year wise calendar has been also prepared for sporting activities.

To develop sports in the state, Directorate Sports and Youth Welfare has established 17 academies and 30 feeder centers for specific sport. These academies are well equipped with world class coaching and training equipments. These academies include 7 academies in Bhopal for Martial Arts (Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Fencing, Wrestling and Wushu), 3 academies in Bhopal for Water Sports (Sailing, Rowing & Canoeing-Kayaking), 1 academy in Bhopal for Shooting, 1 academy in Gwalior for Badminton, 1 academy in Gwalior for Hockey (State Women Hockey Academy), 1 academy in Gwalior for Cricket (Cricket Academy Gwalior), 1 academy in Bhopal for Equestrian, 1 academy in Bhopal for Archery. And the feeder centers located across Madhya Pradesh include Hockey (25 centers), Archery (3 centers), Badminton (1 center) and Tennis (1 center). Famous Sports in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is well known for its sports activities which include some of the popular sports i.e. cricket, football, hockey, badminton, chess and athletics etc. Besides, several other sports like archery, equestrian, karate, wushu, water sports (rowing, canoeing, and kayaking) are also popular in the state. Snooker in Madhya Pradesh

Snooker which is one of the most popular games owes its origin to Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. Snooker, basically a cue sport was invented by British Army officers in Officer’s mess in Jabalpur during 1874 or 1875. The game of Snooker originated as a variation of Billiards, a popular sport activity amongst British Army officers stationed in India. During latter half of the 19th century, modern form of Snooker took shape and this game later became popular in many of the English-speaking and Commonwealth countries. At present, Snooker is counted as a professional game and touring professional players compete regularly around the world. The premier Snooker tournament being the World Championship is held annually in Sheffield, England.

Cricket in Madhya Pradesh

Cricket clubs in Madhya PradeshCricket is one of the oldest and the most popular sports of Madhya Pradesh. State has its own cricket team which represents MP in various tournaments including Santosh Trophy. Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, MPCA, is the main controlling and governing body for cricket in the state. MPCA is an affiliated unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Earlier, before independence, Indore city of Madhya Pradesh was a princely state during rule of Holkar dynasty in the region. At that time, Indore was main hub of cricket activities and Late Yeshwantrao Holkar was much interested in this sport specially. He promoted cricket and provided necessary support to this sport and the sportsmen. He invited various popular cricketers like Col. C K Nayudu, Chandu Sarawate, Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, C S Nayudu, Hiralal Gaekwad, Khandu Rangnekar, and Kamala Bhandarkar to play in his cricket team, known as “The Holkars”. Capt. S Mushtaq Ali, Major M M Jagdale and J N Bhaya were local players who played under this team. Cricket flourished at that time significantly in the region.

For development of cricket in the region, Holkar Cricket Association came in existence (from 1940-41 to 1954-55), then Madhya Bharat (1955 – 57) and subsequently Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (since 1957 till date) took place. MPCA boasts of having two internationally recognized cricket stadiums, The Holkar Stadium at Indore and Capt. Roopsingh Stadium at Gwalior respectively.
In 2008, Sanjay Jagdale MPCA Academy was established by MPCA at Holkar Stadium, Indore with sub-academies located in Bhopal, Gwalior, Sagar, Rewa, Hoshangabad and Jabalpur. This academy has been named after Sanjay Jagdale, former Indian cricketer and former member of Selection Committee. The academy provides regular cricket coaching, systematic fitness management, regular health check up, specific nutrition and purposeful recreational activities to the budding cricketers. Hockey in Madhya Pradesh

Hockey is too popular in MP and the state has its own hockey team, ‘Bhopal Badshahs’ that participates in various state and national tournaments. The state has produced many well known national and international players for Indian hockey team and Roop Singh and Aslam Sher Khan are most popular of all them. Captain Roop Singh Stadium of Gwalior has been named after Roop Singh, the eminent hockey player who was the part of Indian field hockey team which won gold medals for India at 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games. Aslam Sher Khan, who belongs to Madhya Pradesh, also represented India in several international hockey tournaments. He was a part of the World Cup winning Indian hockey team in 1975.

Hockey Madhya Pradesh (HMP) is the governing and controlling body for Hockey in the state. Earlier, HMP was known as Madhya Pradesh Hockey Association (MPHA). In 2014, Hockey Madhya Pradesh became 23rd associate member under wings of Hockey India. HMP is responsible for development of hockey and providing all infrastructure facilities to the hockey players in the state. It also organizes hockey tournaments in the state. Sports and Youth Welfare department of MP Govt. has also established one State Women Hockey Academy in Gwalior to promote Hockey and encourage female players to participate in the sport.

Badminton in Madhya Pradesh

In recent years, Badminton has gained popularity in the country and Madhya Pradesh is also home to numerous badminton lovers. Madhya Pradesh Badminton Association was founded on the 19th October 1946 at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in India. This association was immediately affiliated to the Badminton Association of India. Within a month of its inception, this association staged the 13th National and Inter State Championships at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, India. M. P. Badminton Association has spread its presence and there are its over thirty five District Associations and institutions affiliated all over the State. WUSHU in Madhya Pradesh

Wushu, commonly known as martial arts has emerged as popular sport in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Young generation of the region is showing keen interest in this sport. WUSHU Association of M.P. (WAMP) was set up on 31.03.2001 for promotional and developmental activities concerning Wushu sports. WAMP was affiliated with Wushu Association of India in the year, 2000. Later, in 2003 WAMP was affiliated with M.P. Olympic association. It is now one of the leading associations in India having a number of qualified Coaches, officials and talented players. Holkar Cricket Stadium, formerly known as Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground is one of the main cricket stadiums in Madhya Pradesh. In 2010, Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association renamed it after the Holkar dynasty of Marathas that ruled Indore for several years. Then it became popular as its present name, Holkar Cricket Stadium having seating capacity of around 30,000 people. This ground hosts the most of the state’s home matches in the Ranji Trophy. The stadium has also hosted three ODIs, two of them were played between India and England. The first match was staged on 15 April 2006 between India and England. This stadium has also witnessed Virender Sehwag recording the highest ODI score of 219 at this ground. It had also been one of the venues for IPL 2011. As on most of the cricket grounds in India, this ground also has batsmen-friendly pitch.

Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior

Captain Roop Singh Stadium, established in 1978, is a cricket ground with capacity of holding around 45,000 people, located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Captain Roop Singh Stadium is owned by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) and is operated by Gwalior Division Cricket Association. This stadium has been named after great Indian hockey player Roop Singh, brother of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. Earlier, it was originally a hockey stadium and then turned into cricket ground in 1988. This ground has flood lights and has hosted day-night encounters. The stadium has hosted 10 ODI cricket matches. The first ODI on this ground was played between India and West Indies on 22 January 1988. Pitch of this ground is also batsmen friendly. Sachin Tendulkar made the history by becoming the first cricketer to score a double century in ODI at this cricket ground and a pavilion at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium is specially named after him. This ground has also hosted one match of the 1996 Cricket World Cup which was played between India and West Indies.

Nehru Stadium, Indore

Established in 1964 at Indore, Nehru Stadium is a cricket stadium with a capacity of around 25,000 spectators. Nehru Stadium is owned and operated by Indore Municipal Corporation. The stadium is the mainly home ground for Holkars in Ranji Trophy. Nehru stadium has hosted One Day International match when India hosted the 1987 Cricket World Cup. The Stadium hosted its last ODI match on 31 March 2001 in which Sachin Tendulkar created the history by becoming the first player to reach 10,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Aishbagh Stadium is a field hockey stadium with seating capacity of more than 10,000 people in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This stadium is owned by Madhya Pradesh Government. Aishbagh Stadium is the home ground for Bhopal Badshahs, the World Series Hockey team. This stadium hosts several national and international hockey championships. Roop Singh

Sports Persons in Madhya PradeshRoop Singh Bais was a legendary Indian hockey player, born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He was part of the celebrated Indian field hockey team which won gold medals for India at 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games. He is considered as one of the greatest hockey players of all the times. He was the younger brother of Major Dhyan Chand, the most celebrated player in Indian hockey. Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, named after Roop Singh, was originally a hockey stadium before it was converted into a cricket stadium. His 3 goals against Japan and 10 goals against USA, in the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, 1932 are remembered as his best goals in his sports career. A street in Berlin was also named after him following his impressive performance at the 1936 Olympic games.

Mushtaq Ali

Born in Indore, Syed Mushtaq Ali was a former Indian cricketer, an aggressive Test batsman and a Wisden Special Award winner. Ali holds the distinction of scoring the first Test century by any Indian overseas, when he did it for the team in 1936 at Manchester in England. He scored four first class hundreds in the 1936 during tour of England. He was an opening or middle order right-hand batsman and a slow left-arm bowler. He played for the regional team and private clubs extensively at that time when cricket was a young sport in India. He was not only a sporting legend and an icon for the younger generation of India, but a most popular superstar of his time in cricket.

Chandu Sarwate

Famous Cricketers of Madhya PradeshChandrasekhar Trimbak Sarwate, famous as Chandu or Chandra was an Indian cricketer born in Sagore, Madhya Pradesh. He was an all-rounder (right handed batsman and bowler) who played nine Test matches for India between 1946 and 1951. However, he had a long career in first-class cricket, spanning 32 years, during which he represented Central Provinces and Berar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bombay, Hindus, Holkar, and Vidarbha. His most famous innings was for the Indians against Surrey at The Oval in 1946, when he and Shute Banerjee scored 249 runs for the last wicket, more than the run scored by first nine wickets put together. It is the only time in first-class cricket when the last two batsmen have both scored centuries. It is the highest partnership in first-class cricket between number ten and eleven batsmen. Sarwate was a national selector for three years in the early 1980s, and was one of those selectors who chose the Indian team that won the World Cup in England in 1983. Besides being the secretary of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, he also remained the chairman of its selection committee on several occasions. Apart from being a cricketer and selector, Sarwate held degrees in arts and law and by profession was a fingerprint expert.

Born in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, Varsha Varman is an Indian sport shooter and a member of the Indian Shooting Team. She won bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon in the Women's Double Trap Shooting team event along with her teammates, Shagun Chowdhary and Shreyasi Singh. Besides, Varsha created the world record in Double Trap Junior Women event during these Asian Games. She is the youngest sportsperson from her state Madhya Pradesh to win a medal at the Asian Games. She has also got highest ranking of world’s junior no. 1.

Aditya Joshi

Badminton players in Madhya PradeshAditya Joshi is an Indian badminton player. He was born in Dhar city of Madhya Pradesh, India. He is the first male Indian junior badminton player who ranked first place in the world junior rankings. Joshi recently got the number one slot in the 2014 January junior rankings of the World Badminton Federation. Joshi was the junior national champion in year 2013 and had won two gold medals in Indian junior international tournament. He started playing badminton in 2001 when he was only five years old and within short span of time, he started winning in the categories above his age in the local tournaments. Then, within six years, he started proving himself at the international arena and won the gold medal in Remensco Junior International tournament held in Russia, 2011. During the same year, he also won a gold medal in Asian Sub-Junior championship held in Japan. In 2012, he participated at the India Open Grand Prix Gold. Aditya is one of the exceptional sports persons who have proved their talent by their outstanding performance on national and international levels.

Sandhya Agarwal

Sandhya Agarwal, hails from Indore, Madhya Pradesh is a former captain of the Indian women's cricket team. She played in total 13 Test matches from 1984 to 1995, scoring 1110 runs including 4 centuries. She reached her top score of 190 in test cricket match against England in 1986. She also played in 21 Women's ODIs, scoring 567 runs at an average of 31.50.

These academies provide coaching to the young water sports players as well as promote these sports in the state. Bhopal CM felicitates athletes on National Sports Day

To encourage and honor players of the state for their winning performances various sports awards are given by Madhya Pradesh Government. These sports awards are given in various categories as per eligibility and performance.

Eklavya Award: It is given to the junior players to motivate them to achieve more success in the future. Player should be the domicile of M.P. who has been actively involved in sport for the past five years, has participated in any state or national sport event for two years and have won trophy is eligible for this award. Prize includes a shield, cash amount of Rs. 10000, Certificate, Tie and Blazer. Maximum 10 players are awarded with Eklavya Award each year.

Vishwamitra Award: This award is given to those coaches who have trained the player who has won minimum 2 Gold or 4 silver or 6 Bronze medals in last five years in any national event or has won any international medal. Prize for this category includes a Shield, Cash Rs. 20000, Blazer and Tie.

Vikram Award: It is given to the senior players of the state from various sports categories. Eligibility criterion for this award is same assp Eklavya Awards. Prize for this award contains cash Rs. 20000, Shield, Blazer, and Tie.

Special Award: To honor and motivate, International Medal winner player is also given a special award by the state govt. for his/ her exceptional performance.

Apart from these awards, Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished contribution in development of the sports and Prabhash Joshi Award for the state players are also given by MP government.
