The State is geographically situated between latitude 21.2°N-26.87°N and longitude 74°02'-82°49' E. Enriched with history, culture and tradition Madhya Pradesh is home of World Heritage Centres, Classical Singing and folk dance. The Capital of the State is Bhopal. Indore is the largest city of Madhya Pradesh and Gwalior, Jabalpur, Itarsi are the major cities of the state. The state share borders in the north-east to Uttar Pradesh, to the south-east Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra to the south, to the west Gujarat, and to the northwest Rajasthan. Madhya Pradesh is constituted of 51 districts, 10 divisions, 14 Nagar Nigams, 86 Nagar Palikas and 238 Nagar Panchayats. The constitutional head of the state of Madhya Pradesh is Governor of Madhya Pradesh appointed by the President of India. The hierarchy of administration followed in Madhya Pradesh is not different from the rest of the country. The executive power of the state remains with the Chief Minister of the State. Chief Minister and the cabinet come from the elected members of Legislative Assembly. Madhya Pradesh has only one Legislative Assembly and has 230 seats for it. It also has 40 seats for Member of Parliament from the entire state. The Chief Secretary of the State is the Administrative Head and many Civil Service Officers come in the hierarchy to administrate the state.

Administrative Structure of Madhya Pradesh

With 51 districts and 10 divisions, Madhya Pradesh counts amongst the second largest states in India. While Jabalpur is the largest division with seven Districts, Hoshangabad Division with three Districts is the smallest. The entire stet is adminstered well at various levels. Apart from divisions districts, the regions is further bifurcated into Tehsils and Blocks. There are about 342 tehsils and 313 blocks that ensures smooth administration of the state.

Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly)

Madhya Pradesh has a unicameral Legislature. It comprises of 230 members and is situated in the capital state of Bhopal. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh is the leader of the house. In Madhya Pradesh the power has been exchanged between two major political parties i.e. Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The present government is led by the BJP under the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Prior to him Babulal Gaur and Uma Bharti were the chief ministers of the state from the same BJP. Prior to the last election the state was governed by the Congress under the leadership of Mr. Digvijay Singh. Madhya Pradesh is a prosperous state performing stable governance over decades. Judiciary of Madhya Pradesh

The Judiciary process of Madhya Pradesh is headed by Chief Justice. The high court of Madhya Pradesh is situated at Jabalpur. However, two temporary benches are also present in Indore and Gwalior for High Court of Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh High Court was originally established as Nagpur High Court. However, after the state was carved out in 1956, the Nagpur High Court was deemed as the High Court of Madhya Pradesh with the principal bench at Jabalpur. Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar is the present Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh. The judiciary takes care of both Civil and Criminal cases.

Lokayukta of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has Lokayaukta for the vigil of Anti Corruption. The present Lokayaukta is Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar. The quasi judiciary body was introduced in 1981 in order to provide transparency and good governance. The body is appointed by the government after consulting the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh and the Leader of the Opposition.
